….the party’s over, all good things must come to an end!” Don Meredith enhanced has fame as he sung that song to Howard Cosell years ago on Monday Night Football! Don would tune up when the game was hopelessly lost and the vanquished should just go home. It was his way to telling the audience that the excitement was over….the deal was done!
There is always the temptation to stay at the party too long! Whenever it happens, the results are never good. For example, recently, Paul McCartney, 68, appeared on SNL and performed three of his hit songs. Fortunately, they were mostly instrumental and his faltering voice was not on display for the entire performance. Paul and the Beatles were one of the greatest (if not the greatest) bands in the world. But, Paul, you have stayed too long. Take your hundreds of millions and enjoy life! Work on the management/executive side of the business! Devote your time and money to charitable causes….if that pleases you! But, let us remember your voice the way it was! Get back, Jo Jo!
Another person that has stayed too long is Brett Favre, former Packer super-star, turned tiresome diva! His last throw as a Packer ended as an interception! The same thing happened to his last pass as a NY Jet! Could that be his fate as a Viking? I think so! At 41, he should be kicking back in Mississippi! (Sending texts of the “little guy” to his friends!)
Charlie Rangel should have retired 10 years ago! If he had, his legacy would be in tact; as opposed to being the brunt of numberous jokes and ridicule from a cross-section of the county! Now he is just a sad, old man who will never reclaim his reputation.
Sylvester Stallone put out a movie recently, The Expendables, in which he and several other aging action hero types tried to re-kindle their youthful images. Bad idea! The movie sucked! No one can believe an action hero when they look like they need a walker to get along!
Janice Dickinson, the 55 year-old former, self-proclaimed “super model” can still be seen occasionally on TV. Most recently, she appeared on “I’m a Celebrity…Get Me Out of Here!” She played herself…..a self-centered, spoiled former celebrity! She insists that she has not had plastic surgery….give me a break! Not a pretty sight!
There are many other examples that could be mentioned. There comes a point in everybody’s life when they just cannot do (or be) what they once were. Accept it and move on! You will be happier….and so will those that come in contact with you! Try not to embarrass yourself and those that adore you!
And, you don’t have to be old to stay at the party too long! The lights are dimming fast for Obama. The fat lady is warming up in the wings!
